Mark Anderson celebrated his 30th anniversary with Tennessee Baptist Adult Homes on April 1. Anderson joined the staff in 1989 as director of disabilities ministry and was elected president of the TBAH on Jan. 1, 2016. He is a member of Woodmont Baptist Church, Nashville.

Walnut Grove Baptist Church, Vonore, recently called Jonas Turpin as pastor. Though he has preached for several years, Walnut Grove is his first pastorate.

DEATHS

Longtime Tennessee Baptist volunteer Charles E. “Charlie” Guthrey died March 1 at the age of 94. The McMinn County native moved to Knoxville in 1957 and eventually formed Galloway & Guthrey Achitects-Engineers. Guthrey did numerous church construction projects over the years at no cost. He led the restoration and expansion of the Baptist Collegiate Ministry building at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He was a longtime member of Central Baptist Church, Bearden, in Knoxville where he served in many roles, including deacon. He is survived by his wife, Hazel, two children and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. [Read more…]

Boiling Springs Baptist Church tops new addition with 25-foot cross

BAXTER — After months of construction and anticipation, Boiling Springs Baptist Church topped the steeple tower of its new building addition with a 25-foot cross on Feb. 15.

Construction began in June 2018 on a two-story building addition that will serve multiple purposes. The new addition will host two new entry points into the church, a large welcome and information center, handicap accessible restrooms, classrooms, offices and flexible space to better serve visitors and the community. Etter Baptist Church, Byrdstown, will host its 4th annual Golden 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, March 16, at 9 a.m. The event begins at Sunset Marina in Monroe and runs along the shores of Dale Hollow Lake. Early registration is $25 and includes a T-shirt if registered before March 1; $35 same day registration. All proceeds for the event go toward the Golden Offering for State Missions. Roger Freeman recently announced his retirement as pastor of Grace Baptist Church, Nashville. Freeman is a past president of the Tennessee Baptist Convention. He will continue to serve as an “ambassador” to pastors in Tennessee for the North American Mission Board, based in Alpharetta, Ga.

Oak Grove Baptist Church, Milan, has called Bill Rice as interim pastor.

Matt Judd has been called as senior pastor of Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Lewisburg. Judd and his wife, Beth, recently returned to the United States after serving as International Mission Board missionaries for six years. They have two daughters. Judd holds degrees from Liberty (Va.) Ron Hale retired Dec. 16 as pastor of senior adults/pastoral care at West Jackson Baptist Church, Jackson. He served the church for 12 years. DEATHS

Dan Johnson, minister of music at Glenwood Baptist Church, Nashville, died Oct. 22 at the age of 83 after a battle with cancer. He had served at Glenwood for the past 11 years. Johnson was retired from LifeWay Christian Resources in Nashville where he served for 32 years in the church music department.

During his tenure at LifeWay he served several area churches. In recent years, he was a member of the Tennessee Baptist Men’s Chorale, the Barbershop Harmony Quartet Society and the Nashville Symphony Chorale. He also served in the U.S. Army as a chaplain’s assistant. He is survived by his wife, Chere, three children and four grandchildren. [Read more…]
