‘THE STORE’ TO ASSIST C-N STUDENTS WITH CAREER BASICS

JEFFERSON CITY — Thirty-nine percent of college undergraduates fell at or below income eligibility limits for federal assistance in 2016 according to a recent USA Today story.

The story reports a national trend of students from low-income households enrolling at increasing rates.

As a result, some students are experiencing food insecurity or do not have access to professional clothing for job interviews.

It’s a reality that has hit close to home for those at Carson-Newman University. And it was enough that school employees wanted to do something about it. [Read more…]

GRANT TO HELP APPALACHIAN OUTREACH CONTINUE REACHING THOSE IN NEED

JEFFERSON CITY – Carson-Newman University’s Appalachian Outreach Ministry (AO) was the recent recipient of a grant from the East Tennessee Foundation. The grant comes from the Jefferson Health Care Foundation Fund.

The funding will help in three specific areas of need, according to AO Director Jean-Ann Washam, a member of Knoxville’s Corryton Church.

“Part of this grant will go toward building wheelchair ramps for families who are unable to get in and out of their home safely – specifically the elderly and disabled,” said Washam, who explained that, in turn, provides a safer environment and allows them to live in their homes longer. CARSON-NEWMAN NAMES SEARCH COMMITTEE

JEFFERSON CITY — Tennessee State Representative Harry Brooks of Knoxville, chair of the board of trustees of Carson-Newman University, has announced the formation of two separate search committees as the university seeks a new president following the retirement of President J. Randall O’Brien, who will conclude his 10-year service in December.

A Presidential Search Committee will be tasked with finding the institution’s 23rd president, while an Interim Presidential Search Committee will seek leadership for the office until a new president can be named. [Read more…]

‘BUCKET LIST’ MISSION TRIP EXTENDS TO ETERNITY

I did my best to prepare them, I truly did.

I was gifted with the trust of Carson-Newman University parents who believed in my promise to diligently protect and educate their son or daughter while on a recent mission trip to Chokwe, Mozambique. Ten C-N students joined my husband (Al) and me on a 16-hour flight to South Africa. The trip included a night in Johannesburg, another flight to Mozambique (much shorter, thank goodness), and then a four-hour bumpy van ride to Chokwe. Around the world to a place where cold showers, one bathroom for 12 people, interesting food, little to no Internet, and being stretched to your limit in numerous ways were all a guarantee. So I, being the type-A, OCD person that I am, made sure we were prepared; or at least I tried. [Read more…]

CARSON-NEWMAN’S FISHING TEAM REELS IN TOP-20 FINISH

JEFFERSON CITY — Taking on a competitive and grueling environment, Carson-Newman University’s fishing team, the Eagle Anglers, secured a 17th-place finish in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship.

Hunter Sales, of Blaine, and Tristan Stalsworth, of Jefferson City, launched onto Lake Tenkiller in Tahlequah, Okla., for a contest against 136 teams.

Only the top 12 teams made the cut to compete in the final weigh-in on the third day of the event. [Read more…]

CARSON-NEWMAN’S O’BRIEN ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

JEFFERSON CITY — Randall O’Brien, president of Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City since 2008, has announced his plans to retire, effective Dec. 31, 2018.

O’Brien celebrated his 10th anniversary as Carson-Newman’s 22nd president on July 8.

O’Brien was elected by the university’s trustees in July of 2008 and began transitioning to the position in August of that year. He didn’t officially join the college until Jan. 1, 2009. A native of McComb, Miss., O’Brien was executive vice president and provost at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, at the time of his election. [Read more…]
